At Sheet Metal Services we’re not just sheet metal fabricators, we’re also experts at Powder Coating, so we often get asked what the advantages are over traditional wet paint services. In this blog post, we’re going to give you the details.

Powder Coating is a type of finish coating that is applied as a free-flowing dry powder. The main difference between Powder Coating and a conventional wet paint is that powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. Powder Coating can finish virtually any metal and is suitable for both by consumers and industry. The powder is a mixture of ground particles of resin and pigment which is applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat between 200ºC and 240ºC. This results in a high quality, uniform and durable finish.

More Durable

Powder Coating is tougher than conventional paint, it’s extremely durable, scratch resistant, and while pliable it is hard enough to withstand impact without damage. It’s also more resistant to fading and wearing than other finishes. The colours available are virtually unlimited with various types including matt, gloss, high gloss, stain, candies, iridescent, glitter, and fluorescent.

While traditional paint has to be left to dry, powder coated items can go directly into an oven so there is no flash off period, this is possible as it contains no solvents. This means we can get your product to you much faster.

More Environmentally Friendly

Solvents make up 70% of wet paint which means they have to be sent through after-burners due to environmental legalisation. The powder used in powder coating, however, contains 0% solvent so it reduces costs and is more friendly to the environment. The powder also keeps material loss to less than 5% and most overspray can be recovered.
