Lasers are used in many more things than you probably realise. The first laser was built back in 1960 by Theodore H. Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories, based on theoretical work by Charles Hard Townes and Arthur Leonard Schawlow. Since then they have thousands of different uses that help us in many different ways. Below we list some of the most interesting ways they’re used.

Weaponry & Defense
Northrop Grumman has been testing a military Laser Weapon with the Navy on the service’s Self Defense Test Ship, the former USS Paul F. Foster. If successful these systems could eventually protect a wide array of military personal from air and surface threats.
Monitor Air Pollution
Lasers have recently started being used to monitor air pollution. These systems are often fitted into vehicles that can map a wide area of pollutants, or carried as a portable system. These systems can identify detect pollutants such as butadiene, benzene, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK or better known as laser eye surgery is a type of refractive surgery for correcting vision. This surgery is performed by ophthalmologists that use a laser or microkeratome to reshape the eye’s cornea to improve visibility. LASIK provides most people with long-lasting results.
Diamond Cutting
Diamonds are often cut using very strong lasers. Rough diamonds are placed in a Diamond Cutting Machine, which using a combination of human and AI measures the weight, shape and clarity of the diamond. The operator can they select the shape of the diamond and start the laser cutting process. The diamond laser machines then deals with the sawing, shaping, and blocking.
Photochemistry
Laser systems through the process of mode locking can produce short pulses of light that can be used to initiate and analyse chemical reactions, this is called photochemistry. The short pulses are used to probe the process of the reaction at a high temporal resolution, allowing the detection of short-lived intermediate molecules, this is useful in biochemistry.
